I love using First Words books in speech with todd

I love using First Words books in speech with toddlers & preschoolers! I get LOTS of use out of them and the kids always like looking at the pictures. Here’s how I use them: ❤️ Identifying & expressing pictured vocabulary 🧡 Categories 💛 WH Questions (where do you see clouds? What do you do with crayons, etc.) 💚 Identifying & expressing object functions (find something that keeps you dry in the rain, etc.) 💙 Colors . I always make sure to have one of these books in my therapy bag! These were my daughters’ books when they were younger and I knew they’d come in handy for speech. My grad student also found cute little first words books at Dollar Tree recently so I’ll probably have to pick up some more books myself. 😉 . EASTER PRONOUN FREEBIE! 🐰🐣 . I’m using these tomorrow in speech (and probably next week too). I use these pronoun smash mats for other goals too, not just pronouns! I target: 🐰 Subject/verb agreement: She has, they have, etc. 🐰 Vocabulary 🐰 Multisyllabic words 🐰 Articulation (especially the /sh/ in “she”) 🐰 Fluent speech (a few of my kiddos stutter on the words “he” & “she” so we use these to practice!) . How adorable is this little Easter craft?! My youngest daughter made this at church and I’m pretty sure my oldest made one in preschool a few years back. Just glue cotton balls into Easter eggs and add eyes and a beak to make little chicks! 🐣 . How fun would this be to make in speech or at home with your kids?! You could also sneak in some speech & language goals such as: 🐣 body parts 🐣 spatial concepts (in, out) 🐣 requesting (open eggs, more, glue, help, choosing color grass/eggs, etc.) 🐣 Easter vocabulary (chick, peep, hatch, eggs, basket, grass, etc.) . Spring Break, day 4: Today we visited one of Centr

Spring Break, day 4: Today we visited one of Central Florida’s hidden gems- DeLeon Springs State Park! 💎 And inside the park is the Old Sugar Mill Pancake restaurant where you can make pancakes right at your table (and they had vegan options 🙌🏻)! . We haven’t been here in over 5 years, so it was something fun for the girls to experience (My oldest was just a toddler when we last came & I was pregnant with my youngest). We also got a lot of hiking in today at the park as well. We love fun, little day trips like this. We had a nice beach day earlier this week and my husband and I are planning one more little adventure for the girls as our spring break week comes to an end. The girls and I are officially on spring break! 🙌🏻 The clinic I work for is closing for a week and I was able to get all my adult evaluations completed early for the other company I work for. We are also taking a week off of homeschool! . Looking forward to some much needed rest and relaxation... I stumbled upon the cutest little book series at the library this past weekend: Animal Antics A to Z. Each book focuses on a single letter sound. I checked out the “V” book as that is the letter/sound of the week in homeschool preschool. I also am planning on using it with a preschooler working on /v/ in speech! . What I like about this book: 📚 Target sounds are in initial, medial, and final positions of words 📚 Tons of vocabulary 📚 Interesting story that is relatable to kids. You can work on sequencing, WH questions, story retell 📚 Includes a fun phonemic awareness activity at the end and gives fun facts about the animal . I also picked up the “W” book for preschool next week, and I will be on the lookout for more books, especially for speech! Both of my girls (ages 4 and 6) enjoyed this book. DIY flip books with sticky notes! I tried this out in speech yesterday with one of my little guys and he loved it. It sometimes can be hard getting kids to focus on books and this made the book much more interactive and engaging! . Here’s what we worked on with this book (I Went Walking by Sue Williams): 🐮 Saying “peek-a-boo” when we lifted the flap 🐷 Naming the animal we saw 🐶 Saying animal sounds 🐴 Saying the phrase “I see horse,” etc. . I’m thinking of trying them out with other board books I have. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: basic concepts are SO important for academic success. Children need to be familiar with these concepts so they can be successful in reading, writing, and math. . I’ve been using my Valentine-themed basic concepts cards and coloring sheets for the past few weeks in some of my therapy sessions for my kiddos that need a little extra help with some of these concepts and it’s been so helpful! . I really noticed just how important these concepts were as I was homeschooling my oldest for kindergarten last year. I’d see “Circle the LARGER number,” “Put an X on the shape that is DIFFERENT,” and “Color the FIRST square green.” Kids really need to know exactly what these words mean so they can be successful in completing these types of directions! . If you have kids on your caseload that struggle with these concepts, check out this resource. I also have seasonal packets of basic concepts as well! You don’t need fancy toys for therapy to be effe

You don’t need fancy toys for therapy to be effective! An activity like this keeps the littles on my caseload engaged for awhile and I am able to target lots of goals including: 🚗 Requesting: I put the vehicles in a bag or the box and we work on saying/signing open, more, please, or name the object we want 🚂 Vehicle sounds: Choo choo, hmmmm (boat), raspberry noises for the helicopter, vroom, beep, etc. 🚚 Early words/vocabulary: stop, go, whee, up/down, fast, slow, naming the vehicles, etc. . I don’t always have access to a fancy toy car ramp so we’ve been making do with this old veggie burger bin that I’ve had forever! (A shoebox or another kind of bin would work just as well). 😉 The kids enjoy it and I love that it’s easy to pack up and take on the go too! It’s a win-win! 🙌🏻 so glad I found these toys a few weeks ago as I was digging through my daughters’ old toys! I felt like I won the jackpot! Today is our 100th day of homeschool preschool and first grade! We’ve been looking forward to this day for the last few weeks. I had some fun activities planned for the girls, including dressing up like 100 year old ladies! 👵🏻 . Some of our other activities included: 👵🏻 Building something with 100 LEGOS 👵🏻 Writing our name as many times as we could in 100 seconds 👵🏻 Learning how to say “100” in a different language (we learned it in 6 languages!) 👵🏻 Making 100 thumbprints on a piece of paper 👵🏻 Dressing up like a 100 year old 👵🏻 Drawing a picture of what we’d look like in 100 years 👵🏻 Writing numbers 1-100 (for my first grader) 👵🏻 Making a 100th Day snack 👵🏻 Finishing the sentence, “if I had $100, I would...” 👵🏻 Writing about something they couldn’t do 100 days ago, but now could (for my first grader) . I came across the cutest book at the library last week. Checked it out originally for #homeschoolpreschool but after we read it, I realized it would be great for speech! . So many goals you can target with this book, including: 🐷 Rhyming: pig, wig, boat, moat, goat, dog, log, frog, etc. We find the rhyming words then we try to think of other words that rhyme! 🐷 Articulation/Phonology: lots of CVC words- great for working on final consonants and early developing sounds. 🐷 Vocabulary: lots of animals and other words such as blouse & moat 🐷 Spatial Concepts: in, on, beside, between, in front, behind 🐷 Basic Concepts: color & size concepts . My top 9 of 2020: a mix of speech, homeschool, and family, which pretty much sums up my life right now! 🤪 . It’s definitely been a challenge balancing everything but I wouldn’t trade it for the world! I love being an #slpmom and a #homeschoolmom. I am thankful my husband is healing from his TBI more with each passing month and that he’s here to help me behind the scenes of my TpT store as well as homeschool the girls on the days I’m working. He also helped create my Articulation Word Search Puzzles earlier this year! . It’s our second year homeschooling and this year we decided to make a school area, complete with a white board and table. I’m so glad we did, it really helps keep things organized, and it’s my favorite space in the house! . In July, I started a new job working part-time in a clinic with kids. Most of the kids are around my girls’ age, some a little younger, so I am able to use a lot of their old toys and books in therapy (that monster toy has been a huge hit!) .
